Peak Horizon vs Hertz vs Falcon: Where Each Sits in LA Rental

An honest comparison of the three tiers of LA car rental — when each makes sense, and what you give up.

Peak Horizon vs Hertz vs Falcon: Where Each Sits in LA Rental

Guests sometimes ask why we do not just position ourselves as "the cheap exotic alternative" or "the premium upgrade from Hertz." The honest answer is that we are neither. We sit in a specific spot between corporate rental and exotic shop, and the spot only makes sense if you understand what each tier is actually built to do.

Here is the honest comparison, in the order most travelers encounter them.

Tier 1: Corporate rental — Hertz, Enterprise, Avis, Sixt, Budget

Daily rates: $80 to $400. Available at every airport and most hotels. Massive fleet — typically tens of thousands of cars in the LA market across all brands.

What you get: a car. Usually whatever is on the lot in the size class you reserved. The corporate brands are excellent at logistics, scale, and one-way flexibility. If you need to land at LAX, drive to Phoenix, and drop the car at PHX, this is the tier that handles that without complaint.

What you give up: choice and predictability. The car is "a midsize" or "an SUV," not a specific vehicle. Insurance is sold a-la-carte at the counter, often with deductibles and coverage rules that a tired traveler does not fully read. The check-in and check-out experience involves a counter, a queue, and a shuttle bus from the rental facility back to the terminal. The car itself has been driven by hundreds of strangers and cleaned by a contractor on a schedule.

When this tier is the right call: one-way trips, business travelers with corporate accounts that pre-negotiate the rate and insurance, last-minute bookings where availability matters more than which car, and trips where the car is genuinely just transportation and the brand of the car does not matter.

Tier 2: Peak Horizon — direct private fleet

Daily rates: $97 to $361. A curated LA fleet. Delivery to LAX, BUR, and Greater LA hotels.

What you get: a specific car you chose, delivered to the curb, detailed and fueled. Coverage is straightforward — bring your own eligible policy or add coverage at booking through our insurance partner. The host who hands you the keys is the host who answers the phone if anything happens during the trip. There is no counter, no queue, no shuttle.

What you give up: scale and one-way flexibility. We do not have ten copies of every car — if your dates are popular and you book late, we may be sold out on your first choice. We do not do one-way drops outside LA. Our fleet is curated, which means if you want a Lexus IS, we do not have one to offer.

When this tier is the right call: round-trip LA stays where the car matters — business travelers who want a specific BMW or Mercedes for the week, families who want a real three-row SUV they have seen photographs of before they book, weekend travelers who want a convertible for PCH or a sport sedan for Mulholland. The traveler who would rather text one person than navigate a help desk.

Tier 3: Exotic shops — Falcon and similar Beverly Hills storefronts

Daily rates: $800 to $3,500. Lamborghini, Ferrari, McLaren, Rolls-Royce, Bentley. Often a Beverly Hills storefront with a glass facade and a service team built around special occasions.

What you get: cars Peak Horizon does not rent. A Lamborghini Huracan for a milestone birthday, a Rolls-Royce Cullinan for a wedding weekend, a Ferrari for the kind of evening that justifies a Ferrari. The team at the better shops in this tier knows their cars well and the experience is built around a specific kind of occasion.

What you give up: budget flexibility, mileage, and casual use. Most exotic shops cap mileage at 75 to 150 miles per day, with overage fees that are not trivial. Security deposits run $5,000 to $25,000 on a hold. The cars are not designed for a hotel-to-meeting-to-restaurant week — they are designed for a specific evening or weekend where the car is the point.

When this tier is the right call: a milestone occasion, a one-night statement, a wedding, a music-video shoot, a celebration where the car is the centerpiece and the budget is built around it. We send guests to this tier all the time when they are looking for something we do not have. There is no rivalry — we sit in different rooms of the same house.

Where we explicitly sit

Above corporate rental on car quality, hospitality, and the insurance experience. Below exotic shop on rates, on the most-prestigious badges, and on the kind of occasion the car is built around. A specific, narrow band that fits the traveler who wants their LA rental to feel considered — without paying for an exotic to do meeting-to-meeting work.

Most of our guests have rented from all three tiers at different times in their lives. Most of them keep coming back to us for the trips that fall in our band. That is the only positioning we are interested in earning.
