Renting the BMW X7 for a Yosemite or Big Bear Family Trip
Three rows, AWD, panoramic glass roof — what to know before you book the X7 for the road trip.

The X7 M Sport is one of the most-rented vehicles in our fleet, and the most-common reason guests book it is a multi-day family road trip. Yosemite in spring or fall, Big Bear in winter, Mammoth for a long ski weekend, San Diego for a Disneyland-plus-zoo loop. Three rows, xDrive AWD, 375-hp turbo inline-six, panoramic glass roof, Bowers and Wilkins audio, and a footprint that swallows a family's worth of luggage without complaint.
Here is what we tell guests to plan for before they pick it up.
The car, briefly
BMW X7 xDrive40i, M Sport package. 375 horsepower, eight-speed automatic, full-time AWD with a center differential that biases rearward in normal driving. Seven seats in 2-2-3 configuration with captain's chairs in the second row. 90 cubic feet of cargo with the third row folded, 48 cubic feet with the third row up. $211 per day, 200 miles per day included.
Cargo — what fits
Third row down: a family of four's worth of luggage for a week, plus a stroller, plus a cooler, plus ski boots if it is winter. We have measured this with actual guests; the answer is "yes, it fits."
Third row up, family of six: four full-size roller bags fit in the cargo well behind the third row, plus a backpack each on laps. If you are six adults with a week of bags, you will need a roof box — we do not provide one but they fit on the X7's standard roof rails and Park Tool USA in Burbank rents them.
Fuel and the premium-only constraint
The X7 requires 91-octane premium. This becomes a planning question on a Yosemite trip, because 91-octane is not universal in the foothills.
Going to Yosemite via the 41 from Fresno: top up at the Costco in Fresno (premium, cheapest you will find for 200 miles) or the Chevron in Oakhurst. Inside the park, gas is available at Crane Flat and Wawona but it is regular-grade only and expensive. You can drive on regular in an emergency without damaging the engine, but the car will pull power and you will lose 10 to 15 percent of your range. Plan to fuel before you enter the park.
Going to Big Bear via the 18: fill up in Redlands or San Bernardino on the way up. The Chevron in Big Bear Lake village has 91; the Shell at Snow Summit does as well, but lines on a Saturday in ski season run 20 minutes. Fueling on the climb up rather than at the top is the move.
The third row
Folds flat with a power button in the cargo area. Takes about 15 seconds. The seatbacks in the second row tilt forward to provide a walkthrough; you do not have to remove the captain's chairs or fold them aggressively. Two adults fit in the third row for a meal-to-meal stint; for a multi-hour highway leg, it is a kid row.
Loading order at the hotel
For the canonical family-of-five-with-grandparents trip: heaviest bags in the cargo well first, lighter bags on top, kids' backpacks on the second-row floor, two sleeping bags or a cooler in the front passenger footwell. Skis and boards lay diagonally across the cargo area with the third row down without tipping the load.
The roof and the audio
The panoramic glass roof opens above the front two rows and tilts above the rear. On the climb up the 41 into Yosemite Valley, opening the roof at the El Portal stretch is one of those small experiences kids remember. The Bowers and Wilkins 16-speaker system is genuinely good — bring a Spotify or Apple Music account and let the kids DJ.
Curbside delivery
Free delivery to LAX and BUR, and free hotel delivery throughout the Greater LA area. For a typical Yosemite trip, we deliver to your hotel the night before so you can pre-load and leave at 6 a.m. without coordinating a morning meet. For a Big Bear trip, we deliver morning-of since the drive is shorter.
What to return with
Quarter tank or better, no off-road damage, no chains used without the Yokohama-rated set we provide on request. We meet you at hotel or airport for the handoff. The car comes back, gets detailed, and goes out the next morning to the next family.
Tell us the dates and the destination. We will block the X7.
